Cancer Cluster Salzburg - Our Mission
CCS - a Smart Specialization Center for Tumor-Microenvironment Communication
Despite considerable progress in the fight against cancer, malignant diseases are becoming a global pandemic. In 2012 more than 14 million new cases were diagnosed and about 8 million patients died of cancer. By 2030 the global cancer burden is projected to reach more than 21 million new cases and 13 million deaths per year. The socioeconomic toll of cancer is also alarming; premature death and disability account for yearly economic losses of about USD 1 trillion.
The development of innovative and more efficient therapies is a major challenge for biomedical research of the 21st century.
CCS constitutes an interdisciplinary research network for breaking new grounds in cancer research. By joining forces of oncologists, tumor biologists, immunologists and pathologists, and by integrating clinical study centers and state-of-the-art technology platforms, CCS will contribute to the development of improved personalized cancer therapies.
CCS focuses on the investigation of the intricate cellular communication processes between malignant cells, their microenvironment and the immune system responsible for cancer growth, metastasis and drug resistance. Unraveling the molecular details of such interactions will provide new opportunities for innovative therapeutic concepts to improve and prolong patients´ survival.
