Inflammatory Interleukin-6 Signaling boosts Hedgehog-driven Skin Cancer Growth

August 28, 2018

CCS researchers of the Aberger, Risch and Kenner labs have recently identified the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL6)  as booster of oncogenic Hedgehog/GLI signaling in skin cancer. Combined activation of IL6/JAK/STAT3 and Hedgehog signaling synergistically enhanced the growth of skin cancer lesions, while targeting the IL6 signaling axis turned out to be a novel promising approach to treat skin cancer with resistance to current therapies. The results of Sternberg et al. have been published in the latest issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
